Another is a catheter-based procedure, not as commonly used, where a tiny amount of alcohol is placed in a coronary artery, causing a local heart attack, which causes the very thick part of the heart to die and shrink. For people with mild symptoms, like shortness of breath, I’ll often prescribe medications like a beta-blocker or calcium channel blocker to slow the heart rate or reduce the heart’s contractility.
